Missed chances cost Rovers

Report by Josh Hurst

The sun was shining as Paulton welcomed unbeaten Chippenham Town to the Athletic Ground for their league fixture on Thursday.

The visitors were dominant in possession throughout the early stages of the game, keeping the ball well.

Despite being pressed high the Paulton defence continued to play football out from the back & eventually the visitors found a way to take the lead through their frontman Dan Constable who finished well from inside the box.

With Paulton sitting deep, Chippenham continued to dominate possession at the back but were finding it hard to break through the lines of the Paulton side.

Chippenham’s breakthrough came from a set-piece that was perfectly delivered into the box by Cane Bradbury and put away into the home sides net from the oncoming Ollie Sterling to give them a 2-0 lead.

Despite the score line, Paulton continued to battle on and both sides played some excellent football. Paulton were looking very dangerous down the right side of the pitch and it wasn’t long until Sam Cary went past 2 players before slotting the ball home off the post, with his left foot from outside the box.

There were a number of chances before half time for the home side to equalise, however both times the ball was placed just wide of the target.

The second half was a great display of football from both teams, Chippenham having the majority of possession & Paulton defending excellently.

Chances were few and far between, neither side came close to scoring again until the 70th minute when Ali Sen spotted the GK off his line and tried to lob the ball over him from just over the half-way line, only to see his effort bounce back off the crossbar.

A couple of good quality saves in the dying minutes from the young Rovers keeper, Ben Taylor meant the scores remained 2-1 at full time.

An excellent game of football with both sides having opportunities to take the points.
