Perrott hat trick seals win

Rovers welcomed Whitman College known as 'The Missioneries' from the city of Walla Walla in Washington State USA.

Their head coach Mike Washington hails orginally from Weston Super Mare and brings his charges, who are aged 18 to 22, to Winterield Road. They are basing themselves at Bath University.

This was the two sides third encounter over the last seven years and once again produced a high quality of football and shows the gradual development of the game in the States.

Chris Perkins showed early intent for the visitors, but Ben Lacey responeded with a run down the right. Four minutes in Rovers captain Dan Cleverley threaded the ball to Brandon Barnes whose volley sailed just over the bar. Moments later Barnes hit a low shot well saved by Whitman keeper Stuart Elleworth for a corner.

Whilst the American's showed neat footwork and ball skills they lacked the teamwork and psyicality of a Paulton side that were more vocal and the majorty of whom have been together for several years.

It was no surprise when Paulton took the lead fourteen minutes in. A move by Lacey saw him lay the ball back to right back Stuart Tovey and his firm cross was headed over Ellesworth by Mike Perrott.

Rovers added a second two minutes later when a cross from Dean Evans on the left was firmly headed home by James Billing.

Paulton were now rapent and Elleswoth had to be on his toes to save a hard hit Cleverley drive.

A third goal was added after twenty one minutes when Barnes sent Perrott through the middle and as the keeper game to close him down, the ex-Frome Town man placed the ball into the corner of the net.

Not to be outdone 'The Missioneries' puleed a goal back four minutes later. Their skillful right winger Logan Grime cut in from the right hit a low drive which Paulton keeper Rob Brown could only parry for Perkins to tap ther ball home.

Nick McCottie came on for Billing and immediately set up player coach Josh Jeffries to fire home a fourth on thirty nine minutes.

Paulton made 5-1 in the fourty fourth minute with a thunderbolt of a shot by Perrott to seal his hat-trick.

The plucky students kept pressing to reduce the defecit. A long ball by Alex Banks found Grime who laid it to Riley Paul but his shot was narrowly wide.

The response was neat move between Barnes, Klein-Davies and McCootie which the substitute keeper Nicos Contros saved and then the stopper did well to snuff a xhance for Klein-Davies to add to Rovers tally.

With the final chance of the game Contros saved well from McCootie's low effort.

Paulton team - Rob Brown, Stuart Tovey (Ollie Price), Dave Thompson, Scott Brice, Marcus Mapstone, Mike Perrott, Dean Evans (Josh Klein-Davies), Ben Lacey, Dan Cleverley, James Billing (Nick McCootie), Brandon Barnes (Josh Jeffries).
