Paulton retain JJ Memorial Trophy

Paulton played their fifth friendly in a week with a local derby at West Clews for the JJ Memorial Trophy.

The first half saw a stalemate despite several chances created by both sides. For the vistors Scott Brice had opportunites from corners and free kick and Josh Jeffries twice drove volley just over the bar.

Welton contain a number of players who had come through the youth team. Jamie Taylor who played over twenty first matches led the Welton line and twice saw shots saved by Kyle Phillips.

The best move of thhe half came just before the break from Paulton. Paddy Doyle played a one two with Ibz Diallo laid the ball to Brandon Barnes back into the path of Jeffries whose shot was narrowly over the bar.

Paulton made six changes for the second half and with two minutes James Billing had made 1-0 when Ben Lacey's deep cross from the right wing was misssed by thee keeper and the former Welton man had the simplest of tap in's to an empty net from three yards out.

Five minutes later Billing and Lacey combined and the latter should have scored, seeing his chip coming off the Welton keeper feet for a corner.

Gary Banks had a great chance for Welton only for his drive to be deflected into the hands of Paulton trailist keeper Louis Pierre.

Billing should have got his second on seventy one minutes when he latched onto a through ball from Dave Thompson round the keeper and stroke the ball goalwards only to see Billy Cooper get back to clear off the line.

He succeeded in making it 2-0 with fifteen minutes left. Lacey's turn of pace down the right took him past his marker and his well paced cross was perfect for biling to firmly head home.

Welton chairman and former Paulton player and manager Stuart Minall presented the JJ Memorial Trophy to Paulton captain Dan Cleveley.
