Manager John Rendell made nine changes in the starting line up against Frome Town from the side that beat Swindon Supermarine in the FA Cup. It gave him the opportunity to rest players some carrying injuries ahead of Saturday's FA Trophy match at Salisbury. He was delighted with the performance against an experienced opponent.
It was a fairly even contested local derby in the Bigfreebet.com (Southern League) Challenge Cup 1st Round saw Frome take the spoils.
Ollie Knight fired in from the left parried by Paulton keeper Andy Hannah and Jake Jackson could only fire the loose ball over the bar.
Rovers then saw two shots by Mario Mateus blocked and Bristol Rovers loanee Tyrrone Tucker-Dixon shot over the bar. Liam Monelle returning to Paulton where he spent a spell 3 years ago whilst on the books of Bristol City combined with Mateus but his through ball to tucker-Dixon found the winger offside.
Hannah brought off fine saves from Jackson then Joe Raynes.
After a scoreless first half Frome took a 57 minutes lead as Rovers failed to clear their lines and Raynes turned the ball home.
Three minutes later they added to the score as Marcus Mapstone finished off after a corner by George Miller on the left.
Paulton kept battling with sub Josh Morgan- Wiiliams immediatly causing problems on 63 minutes his through ball saw Dave Sims ride two tackles to turn and shot past Kyle Phillips to reduce the arrears.
Hannah again made a fine stop from Ben Withey and then Knight. Morgan-Williams sent Monelle down the right and his fierce shot hit the side netting.
With two left Morgan-Williams thought he had levelled as he controlled a loose ball and thundered his shot against the cross bar with Phillips well beaten.
