A swirling wind made it difficult for Paulton to defend in the first half. A 3rd minute miss by Dunstable Town striker, Lee Roache, when he should have scored set the scene.
Rovers’ Dave O'Hare had a shot deflected and then Roche again broke through and hit the side netting.
Darren Mullings won a header for Paulton and Kyle Tooze's shot was blocked.
The visitors missed another good chance when Gary Wharton and Chris Vardy combined and should have finished better.
Leon Jeanne threatened down the home right, fed Josh Morgan-Williams, who wasted his chance.
Then on 40 minutes Victor Osobu cut in from the left for Town and his lob was deflected. The corner on the left was taken by right back Steve Wales whose cross caught in the wind, clipped the far post and went n into the net.
Roche missed another great chance in added time after a good 1-2 with Osobu.
Rovers pushed forward from the start of the 2nd half and Tooze, Mullings and Jeanne had a neat move before Osobu responded, broke, rounded John only for Brown to get back and clear.
Wharton had a similar chance but this time John cleared with his foot.
The Duns grabbed a second when Connor Calcutt headed home from another Wales corner after 68 minutes.
Rovers got back in the game two minutes later as Alex Grimshaw was fouled and Jeanne chipped in a lovely free kick.
Wharton was again prevented from scoring by John's foot and sub Tom Knighton had a late effort for Paulton.
Just before the end Rovers’ coach, Aaron Brown, was shown a red card for what appeared an innocuous foul on Wharton.
