Rovers travelled to Bridgwater town on the back of an excellent team performance against Merthyr Town Saturday but they were unable to repeat the form that saw them claim top spot as they went down 2-0 and surrendered top spot to their opponents.
Bridgwater were quickest out of the blocks and ex-rovers player Joe Bushin tapped home in the first minute after goalkeeper Kyle Phillips could only parry a Kris Miller shot into the path of the league’s top scorer. Rovers looked to respond immediately when McCootie drove through the Bridgy defence only to drag his shot wide.
The next passage of play saw both teams showing trying to assert their dominance in the game and some strong challenges were being put in by both sides and the first booking of the evening was given to Scott Brice after he was adjudged to have fouled after what appeared to be a good old fashioned 50/50 challenge.
Bridgy extended the lead mid way through the half when a long punt down field from Chris Wright caused confusion between full back and keeper and allowed Bushin to tap in again for his second of the evening.
The remainder of the half progressed in the same fashion with both teams continuing to put in the hard tackles and the very few chances either side had were wasted by poor finishing and the half finished with another Rovers player in the book as McCootie was booked for a mistimed challenge.
The half time whistle blew with Bridgy going in at the break 2 nil up.
Manager Bunyard must have had some stern words with the team in the interval as they came out a different side and some good work from Dan Bowman was nearly rewarded as Perrott saw his shot saved.
Soon after two Bridgy defenders collided when they both challenged for the same ball. To the shock of most of the crowd referee Corp gave the free kick to Bridgwater.
Rovers kept pushing for a way back in to the game and it looked like they had found it when Wright appeared to have been beaten by a Ben Lacey shot only for the ball to bounce off the post and the keepers back and out for a corner.
The combination of Bowman and Lacey looked to be Rovers best way of getting back in to the game as they continued to cause trouble for the Bridgy full back but the usual clinical finishing from Rovers attack was missing.
With the clock ticking away Bunyard took off Price at the back and replaced him with striker Klein-Davies but the addition of an extra striker couldn’t find a way back for Rovers and the game finished 2 nil.
