Report by Jon Green
Rovers began their pre-season schedule with a good win over Street FC on a sunny Friday night. Sporting several new faces, Rovers shook off some early rust to produce some good football.
There were a number of encouraging signs of interlinking play, especially down the left, that put Rovers in good positions a number of times throughout the game. It was this pressure that led to the first goal in the 16th minute. From a corner on the left, Rovers were able to nod in a relatively unchallenged chance at the far post.
Rovers' defence kept Street to just a couple of chances in the first half, both of which were dealt with comfortably and the rest of the half played out with Rovers mainly making the openings.
Rovers' second came early in the second half. More good work on the left in the 46th minute, led to a chance which was parried away by the keeper but only to the oncoming Rovers forward who tapped in easily.
With the half unfolding in a similar pattern to the first period, Rovers pressure paid off again in the 55th minute. A corner, from the right this time, led to Rovers tapping in at the near post coming through a static Street defence.
After a number of changes to the Rovers' lineup, Street began to up their game and started to get a few chances of their own but the defence held firm until the 83rd minute when a neat counter attack put the hosts on the scoreboard.
Rovers added their 4th in the 89th minute when, from another corner, the ball went to the far post and was only partially cleared by the Street defence. Rovers put the ball back into the box and, under some pressure, the ball was headed in.
All in all, it was a good opening run out which saw some nice moves and encouraging signs for the season ahead.
