Match Report by Jon Green

A good crowd at The Winterfield Stadium were treated to nine goals on Saturday afternoon with seven of those going to the hosts.

Rovers went into their final home league match of the season hoping to get the better of an Ivybridge side that had been a thorn in their side before this season. Not only knocking them out of the Les Phillips Cup but holding them to a draw last month, putting a dent in their momentum in the league run in.

It was obvious from the start that the hosts were not intending to slip again and set about taking the game to Ivybridge. In the opening minutes, Brandon Bak had the ball taken off his toe at the last second as he closed in on the goal.

But the home support didn’t have to wait long before the first goal came. In the 9th minute Kitan Jaiyeoba cut in from the left along the edge of the box and hit an unstoppable shot past the keeper.

Chris Peck went close with a header from a corner a few minutes later before Brandon Bak got his first in the 19th minute. He chased down a defender muscling him off the ball and poking the ball past the oncoming keeper. The ball initially hit the post but it came back to him and he knocked it into the empty net.

The third came in the 25th minute when Max Williams found Kitan lurking on the edge of the box again. He made space for a shot and hit it low and hard into the bottom left corner.

It was a great start and it could have been the end of the game for Ivybridge but they hit back almost immediately when a skewed volley by Kai Burrell bounced up perfectly for Chris Harvey dive onto the ball and head past James Smallcombe.

Undeterred, Rovers pushed again and as the half closed some brilliant footwork by Kitan got homto the byline where he flicked the ball towards the goal and Brandon Bak headed in at the near post.

The momentum continued early in the second half when Kitan completed his hattrick. Stan Wyatt fed Brandon Bak near the goal and he held it up before laying it off for Kitan to stroke the ball in from six yards out.

In the 54th minute, Rovers sixth goal came and Kitan was involved yet again. He broke clear on the right and crossed in low where he found Stan Wyatt. He side footed the ball goalwards and although the keeper got his hand to the ball he couldn’t keep it out.

A number of substitutions followed but it didn’t stop the pressure Rovers were applying. In the 81st minute Krystian Woods was brought down by the keeper as he made his way into the box. Brandon Bak stepped up to dispatch the penalty to grab his hattrick.

Ivybridge pulled another one back as the half closed when James Forrest hit a beautiful strike from 20 yards out.

But it didn’t take the gloss off an incredible performance by Rovers and one that should give them huge confidence going into the next game against title rivals, Torpoint Athletic.

With a hattrick apiece, match sponsors MCM Garage chose Kitan Jaiyeoba and Brandon Bak as Men of the Match (Unfortunately, Brandon had left by the time of the picture)
